About

Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, two of my favorite activities as a child were playing with mud and fire. I knew I had found my calling when I walked into Philip Cornelius’ ceramics studio at Pasadena City College in 1996. Working in clay has been a constant for the nearly 30 years since; I pursued a degree in ceramics, graduate school, and have run my own ceramics program for 25 years as a full-time high school ceramics instructor. I have built an entire life on clay, whether through teaching or engaging in my own work. I enjoy all facets of the medium, from large-scale handbuilt sculpture to throwing on the potter’s wheel. As a teacher, I believe in the inherent ability of clay to reconnect us to the simple joys of the act of creation in an increasingly abstract and technological world. In my own work I strive to create pieces that evoke a sense of ritual and the archaic, allowing my love for the natural world and early human history to show in forms, glazes, and textures. When not engaged in art, I can be found seeking out wild places and creatures in the ocean, mountains, and deserts of Southern California.
